Eastcliff, the Los Angeles-based indie-soul-rock band, incorporates a dynamic range of flavors, basking in a time-forgotten sheen that feels straight out of the breezy heyday of Van Morrison and Neil Young. While Eastcliff is spiritually aligned with frontman Matthew Colby Davidson’s past endeavors, a newfound Americana tint sets it apart. It draws inspiration from artists, including Father John Misty and My Morning Jacket, especially their invigorating live performances. The result is soulful and psychedelic, aided by the lush backdrop of a seven-piece backing band.
With a ton of sentimentality, a subtle touch of funk, and soulful vocals, Davidson’s Eastcliff project delves into nuanced fusion work on “Please Stay With Me.” Lyrically, the message of the song is clear. The longing in Davidson’s vocals emphasizes the doe-eyed poem, giving the song its heartfelt atmosphere. The arrangement, though, is where Davidson showcases his complex artistry. With the help of an impressive backing band, “Please Stay With Me” weaves many influences together in an Eagle Scout-level knot for a waterfall of silky smooth melodies. These elements are blended to create a soaring ballad that balances loose and honed. “Please Stay With Me” could be released in any era of music and feel right at home. Davidson’s acrobatic vocals cascade down a funky arrangement for a blissful moment that provides a quick escape from reality.
“‘Please Stay With Me’ is a song that has morphed over time and has pleasantly surprised me. It was a harder rock song until my keyboardist, JC Wright, laid down his funky keyboard part. I muted the guitars and finally saw the direction it was meant to go. Background singers in Africa, Album cover taken in Japan by yours truly, and drums played by the late great Clyde Stubblefield of James Brown fame,” explains Davidson. “It’s a collage of elements coming together to make a tight, funky tune.”
