LISTEN: Low Beam’s “High Lovin'” Is Powerful Fusion Bliss With Hints of Jazz and Dashes of Rock

Low Beam is a Brooklyn-based five-piece that infuses classic indie pop/rock with its eclectic blend of funk, electronic, and rock tendencies. Taking its name from the discography of dream pop duo Her’s, Low Beam has a penchant for creating tight, full-sounding live shows that capture both the spaciness of its more psychedelic influences and the groove and grit of its funk-rock roots.

Initially founded by roommates Joe Gallo (vocals/guitar) and Eric Sabshon (guitar) during their time at Binghamton University, Low Beam began as a bedroom-produced project. Gallo and Sabshon would play to their friends at house parties, bringing their friends onstage as accompaniment and garnering a significant following in the Binghamton music scene. Post-graduation saw the pair move to Brooklyn and let the project go dormant, until eventually adding drummer Jason Sabshon, bassist Eli Furman, and keyboardist Ty McHugh to the roster in late 2022, signaling a long-awaited return to live performance for their fans.

Low Beam’s fusion prowess is on full display with the release of “High Lovin’.” The band’s latest single is a funky, pop-leaning, soulful anthem with lighthearted melodies that fall over the unpredictable arrangement like a blanket warms a cold body. The way the band intricately highlights their personality while making their varying influences proud is a testament to their songwriting and musicianship. What starts as an explosive pop tune slowly slides into a jazzy onslaught of neck-breaking drums and whirling guitars, allowing the band a moment of experimentation through the fog of their undeniable commercial promise. Low Beam are sonic chameleons, adapting to their mood and allowing the music to flow freely in whatever direction they please. The groove-laden “High Lovin’” introduces the young band as thought-provoking, daring artists who can alter the room’s atmosphere by allowing their lofty visions to manifest into freewheeling anthems.

“High Lovin’, the third single from our upcoming album, The Grocery Store, showcases our blended musical backgrounds, creating a unique and eclectic sound. For this track, we wanted to maintain some of that live, jam-band feel with added flavor where it felt right,” explains the band when asked about their new single. “This song gives everyone a moment to shine, and we love taking the listener along for a journey as we navigate through each section. Lyrically, we wanted to keep it light and fun while showing off a lot of character, drawing inspiration from ’70s funk tunes. We’re super proud of how this song turned out, and we hope it inspires more aspiring artists to hit that record button and create something special!”
