Golden Age Thursday: The Cramps Go Guttural & Shocking Live at N.Y. Mudd Club 1981

When it comes to pushing the boundaries of punk and truly dismantling the genre to make something fresh, The Cramps are one of the earliest examples of the artistic freedom associated with the genre. From their eccentric stage names, the founding members, Poison Ivy and Lux Interior, to their undeniably, palpably weird yet incredibly immersive live shows, The Cramps are one of the most unique voices to emerge from the ’80s hardcore era. Their legacy is littered with lineup changes, off-kilter, nearly drumless studio albums, and a timeless energy that has not, and possibly never will, be matched.

For this Golden Age Thursday, we have a hauntingly beautiful performance from The Cramps circa 1981 in New York City. The footage comes from Paul Tschinkel, who captured the show for his iconic cable show, Paul Tschinkel’s InnerTube. In the video, you feel the youthful prowess and freeing self-expression that made The Cramps the band they are. From guttural yelps to searing guitars, The Cramps are a one-of-a-kind show, and the power of the internet has brought that intensity directly to our screens. You can watch the full performance below.
