25 years ago today (6/30/00) in one of rock’s most tragic events ever, nine people were trampled to death during Pearl Jam’s appearance at Denmark’s Roskilde Festival as the crowd rushed the stage. Investigations have since concluded that the events were an accident, and many European venues now ban crowd surfing. The Pearl Jam song “Love Boat Captain” refers to the tragedy with the lyrics “Lost nine friends we’ll never know… two years ago today.”
