They Might Be Giants: Venue Songs

The new They Might Be Giants DVD, Venue Songs, raises some of life’s persistent questions, which only a private detective like Guy Noir could find the answers to. For instance, why the references to Garrison Keillor? Is the deranged millionaire really the “Bill Gates” character from the Mac commercials? And if so, what’s the difference?

What would compel TMBG to release a DVD of eleven abbreviated songs about venues they’ve played? Was it merely the make-believe challenge of a mock millionaire, or did they have another motive?

The answer will be revealed before your eyes–the videos are delightful. Many are animations reminiscent of styles that emerged during the beat generation. Further, an inspection of the credits uncovers the creative involvement of both Johns in the design,

direction and production of some of these animated gems. The DVD also includes four, full-length videos (three are songs from Spine) and comes with an audio CD that contains the original eleven, live versions, plus many more (though still diminutive) venue songs.

Oh, and the music? It’s pure They Might Be Giants, but for me size does matter. While I enjoyed the videos, I’m left somewhat unsatisfied by songs that end prematurely.
