You can always count on Prince to keep you guessing, but the Purple One has taken the element of surprise to a new level by holding a press conference to announce a tour and then not announcing any dates.
The action started earlier today when Prince invited all of his fans to come to the Apollo Theater in Harlem for a press conference at 6PM this evening. When journalists and fans arrived they were greeted by a huge poster that said “Welcome 2 America” and featured Prince. Yet, by the end of the event everyone was left scratching their heads as no specifics were announced.
Here’s what we know – Prince will host and perform at a concert series called Welcome 2 America that will also feature Mint Condition, Janelle Monae, Cassandra Wilson and Esperanza Spalding among others. What we don’t know is exactly where these shows will take place. Â Billboard refers to a “forthcoming tour,” Live Nation tweeted about Prince performing in NYC this December while Rolling Stone first tweeted W2A would be a residency at the Apollo then said it would be a multi-night stand in the NYC area. Now, RollingStone.com has a headline that refers to Prince announcing an East Coast concert series linking to an article that was blank…

From all the interest this non-announcement received it’s clear music fans are hungry for Prince shows and the legendary rocker is prepared to deliver. We’ll just have to wait a little bit longer to find out where. W2A promoter Live Nation promises to provide more details in the next few days.

I once catered a Prince gig and one of his requests was not to have staff make eye contact with him. Odd guy, amazing guitar player.
