It may seem like Soulive’s ten-show Bowlive III residency at Brooklyn Bowl has just started, but we’re nearing the finish line. Last night marked the ninth guest-filled performance for the trio, who welcomed bassist George Porter Jr., Nigel Hall, guitarist Mark Whitfield, vocalist Ledisi, pianist Eldar and The Bowlive Horns to share the stage with them before the show let out. Hall and Alecia Chakour opened the action-packed evening, with HT contributor Wyllys spinning between and after each set.

The NYC-based band kept a Bowlive III tradition going by starting the show sans guests on Steppin’ before GPJ came out for a pair of Meters songs in Pungee and I Need More Time. Nigel Hall helped out Porter and the trio on Eden Brent’s Leave Me Alone leading to Ledisi’s first appearance, with Adam Deitch on drums, for Knockin’ off her 2009 Turn Me Loose LP. Ledisi, Soulive, GPJ and The Bowlive Horns along with Eldar, assembled for a take on the Aretha Franklin version of Don Covey’s Chain of Fools to end the set. The second set included the Soulive original Cannonball, performed with The Bowlive Horns, jazz guitarist Mark Whitfield on War’s World Is A Ghetto and Porter Jr. leading the trio through The Meters’ Funky Miracle, People Say, Ain’t No Use and Out In The Country as well as his own He Bite Me (The Dragon).
