Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band/Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, New Orleans, LA, 4/28, 4/29/12

The first weekend of the annual Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans has come and gone with an incredible bang. Not only did a reunited Beach Boys close out the first day but Tom Petty dug his heels into some blues on day two and Bruce Springsteen amassed a congregation thousands strong on day three as he preached and prayed, boogied and rocked. It was a weekend of legends not ready to settle down slowly.

Cake: Raleigh Ampitheatre, Raleigh, NC 4/15/12

Cake’s appearance at the Raleigh Amphitheater didn’t include their disaffected traffic serenade “Long Line of Cars,” but it did contain a long line of songs from the band’s 20-year career. In fact, “Long Line of Cars” was about the only song they didn’t play that would be expected by the 3,000 or so people in attendance. Armed with a disdain for cameras of any kind and a relatively modest production featuring a disco ball and desert backdrop, the veteran band unfurled two separate sets full of aging college radio gems, indelible alternative hits, and new songs.

Lotus – Music Farm, Charleston, SC 2.29.12

Despite the need for some much needed acoustic improvements, the members of Lotus were mostly able to overcome the sonic limitations of the venue, delivering yet another satisfying two sets of danceable electro-indie tunes.

Chairlift: Crescent Ballroom, Phoenix, AZ 4/14/12

With a show and a new album that is melodic, delicate and slightly odd in places, the members of Chairlift are fantastic performers, especially for how long they've been in existence, and their music manages to be accessible and 80s vintage without being cheesy.

North Mississippi Allstars: Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn, NY 4/7/12

The North Mississippi All-Stars seemed right at home during the second night of their two show stay at Brooklyn Bowl.  While Williamsburg is a far cry from Hernando, the love of southern fried electric delta blues is universal, noted by the varying ages and races of the fans in attendance.

Yonder Mountain String Band: Orpheum Theater, Flagstaff, AZ 4/10/12

After passing the last three weeks playing in the south, Yonder Mountain String Band set their sights on returning to their comfort zone: the mountain towns out west. In Flagstaff, Yonder holds a history of playing their brand of high-energy bluegrass to electrified crowds and this Orpheum show was no different.  Yonder arrived on stage around 8:30 pm  as Jeff Austin greeted the crowd enthusiastically. “Nice showing Flagstaff, and it's a Tuesday!”

M83: The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA 04/22/2012

The synthesis of samples and their own instruments created a massive and rich sound, but essentially it allowed M83 to play both the rock band and the DJ, the loner and the cool kid, the live band and the studio band.

White Denim: Maxwell

In a similar vein to Neil Young & Crazy Horse, the four members of Austin, Texas’ White Denim took the stage Saturday night in Hoboken, and proceeded to pummel the capacity crowd with an onslaught of frenetically paced and emotionally fueled songs and instrumental histrionics.
