Robert Randolph & The Family Band: Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn, NY 11/25/11

Thanksgiving is certainly one of the most family friendly holidays and Robert Randolph & The Family Band made the days surrounding it an extended family throw down.  The group decided to host a residency from Tuesday until Saturday, taking Thursday off for the obvious turkey obligations.  On Friday night the venue was approximately half to three quarters full for  the band's third show at this fantastic location.

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue: Terminal 5, New York, NY 11/11/11

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue have gone from opening shows at Terminal 5 to headlining and selling them out in seven months, a great accomplishment, but what was even more impressive was the rabid response the crowd gave him over and over again.  There were tons of cheers, full on dance parties and a whole lot of toasting to the New Orleans group as they rocked the Big Apple.

M83: Mezzanine, San Francisco, 11/10/2011

The band can program their technological flourishes and rock out on real instruments, making their hard work look easy and producing a sound that the band could easily convert to fill arenas and stadiums. If M83 keeps up their current progression, they may just do both.

The Antlers: Nouveau Casino, Paris, France 11/21/2011

The Antlers’ evident enjoyment in playing to European crowds was certainly reciprocated by an equally fervent group of fans. It’s safe to say that The Antlers are welcome back to the Nouveau Casino at anytime as long as they continue to put on softly-layered and great sounding live performances.

Chris Isaak: The Manship Theatre, Baton Rouge, LA, 11/11/11

Coming out in a red-hot Porter Wagoner-styled ensemble, upon spying cameras in the hands of a few, he coaxed them into taking as many photos as they wanted: “I didn’t put this suit on for nothing”, he quipped. He would make a disco ball-like re-entrance for the encore in a mini-mirror-plated suit shooting bolts of reflected light throughout the intimate theatre. Getting everyone in a good-time mood, his opening repertoire included “Beautiful Homes”, “Dancing”, “Somebody’s Crying” and “I Want Your Love” which had Yatovitz doing his “dance of love”. “If you enjoy him, you can take him home,” deadpanned  Isaak.

New Found Glory: Station 4, St. Paul, MN 11/5/11

NFG are touring in support of their new album titled Radio Surgery, as they performed the self titled new single as well as “All Downhill from Here,” “ Hit or Miss,” “ Head on Collision,” “ Kiss Me,” “ Something I Call Personality”  and other fan favorites. The show was more passionate during the encore where they played   “Basket Case” (Green Day) “ Blitzkrieg Bop” (The Ramones)  and their own “My Friends Over You.”  During the last song Pundnik jumped off of the stage and was mobbed by fans until he grabbed a random beer off of a window ledge took a swig. A good party was had by all.

Mona: Electric Factory, Philadelphia, PA 11/20/11

Nick Brown, lead singer and guitarist of the Nashville-by-way-of-Ohio-based rock group Mona, hasn’t broken a string in six months, but this evening at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia he’s already broken two in back to back songs; it doesn’t seem to bother him the least.  There’s an edge to Mona’s sound and band complexion, greatly elevated by Brown’s attitude and energy, comparable to The Clash’s Joe Strummer with a faint similarity in the style made public more recently by the Kings of Leon.

Black Label Society: House Of Blues, New Orleans, LA, 10/09/11

Welcome to the world of the Black Label Society. They may look like something out of Sons Of Anarchy but their hearts are pure rock and they are fiercely loyal to their fans, many of whom travel to witness as many shows as possible; one lady in attendance , admitted before the show that she came from Tennessee just to see the band one more time. “It’s like a big family,” bass player JD DeServio told me about the rapport between the band and their fans. Meet & Greets are always friend-making soirees, enabling everyone to get to know each other before the band comes in to mingle.
