Ani DiFranco: The Fillmore San Francisco, CA 4/06/2011

All in all, it was certainly an off night for Ani DiFranco and her band. But for a performer who is such a regular fixture on the folk circuit, it’s both understandable and forgivable. Still, as DiFranco continues to advance in her career, she could learn from going back and revisiting some of the rawness and emotional honesty of her earlier records to invigorate some of the new work with a similar empathy

The Arcade Fire: Comerica Theatre, Phoenix, AZ 4/13/11

The Arcade Fire re-write the rules of what a rock band looks like, appearing as the “high school band geeks” gone rock star cool. And as the band and fans sang in unison "ooh ooh ooh oooh” on the set finale “Wake Up,"  the Comerica Theater sounded like a World Cup soccer match – call it a win-win night for all in attendance.

Toad the Wet Sprocket: Higher Ground, South Burlington, VT 3/31/11

In the 20 plus songs and slightly less than two hours Toad the Wet Sprocket played in the Ballroom at Higher Ground 3/31, virtually none of the tunes sounded appreciably different than the original recordings some of which date back 25 years. Yet, based on the scattered but nonetheless hearty acclamation so many of those tunes received, the band still hits a chord with their audience, perhaps for that very familiarity.

North Mississippi Allstars: Tipitina

How do you start off talking about a concert that was so amazingly out of this world, that there are no words to actually describe it? Maybe it was the big ole Super Moon that hung precariously close to the Big Easy that stirred up the soul-bending sounds that emanated through the walls of this favorite local music hang out. Maybe it pulled out something dangerously close to blues heaven that the people inside were simply overcome. Or maybe these three men are just that damn good.

Lisa Loeb: Yoshis SF, San Francisco, CA 2/25/11

Lisa Loeb is an accomplished singer-songwriter with a discography that stands up next to her contemporaries. Hopefully the next time she comes into town to play, she won’t try to wear too many hats (or different glasses, for that matter), and she’ll be Lisa Loeb, the musician we came to love over the past fifteen years.

Sarah McLachlan: Paramount Theater, Oakland, CA 2/6/11

Even still, there’s always been an earnestness to Sarah McLachlan’s persona, as well as a captivating charm to her music that continues to make people pay attention. Her sold out show in February at Oakland’s Paramount Theatre is another testament to the fact that people are still very interested in Sarah McLachlan. All the frustrations with her seeming scarcity of ingenuity at this point in her career are valid and credible, but leave it to McLachlan to look those exasperated listeners square in the eye, crack a wry smile and belt out with that angelic voice, leaving behind all that disappointment.

Suzanne Vega: Palace of Fine Arts San Francisco, CA 01/27/2011

There was a surprisingly wide spread of ages at Suzanne Vega's recent San Francisco show at the Palace of the Fine Arts, from children to seniors enjoying the two hour-long concert. She split the show into two main sets, followed by a three song encore. She covered the breadth of her catalogue, while also playing two songs from the forthcoming musical Carson McCullers Talks About Love, which she co-wrote with Spring Awakening sensation Duncan Sheik. Sadly, though, she omitted songs from her insanely undervalued third album Days of Open Hand. But, with a collection of songs so rich and compelling, it’s understandable.

Blackberry Smoke: Hard Rock Live, Biloxi, MS, 3/11/11

Blackberry Smoke is a fun, full-of-enthusiasm southern rock band out of Atlanta, Georgia. They’ve been humping the venues big and small for the past ten years and have built up quite a faithful following. They rock out and electrify audiences with a style that is infectious and boogie-woogie satisfying. But on this night, the tempo changed. Deciding to go on with the show they walked out on stage with the bare minimum of instruments and announced to the crowd that “it’s good from time to time to play the songs like they were written”; and then proceeded into acoustic versions of some of their most popular tunes.

Trey Anastasio: Music Box, Hollywood, CA, 3/4/11

They were hard to come by, but if you were able to score a ticket to Trey Anastasio’s intimate show at the Music Box on March 4th, consider yourself lucky. The rare west coast appearance proved to be an ebullient occasion that featured two stellar sets, one (mostly) acoustic, the other electric. Trey himself looked healthy, happy and focused, the darker days now seeming to be behind him, and his band sounded as tight as can be and as vibrant as ever.
