Rage Against The Machine: Hollywood Palldadium, Hollywood, CA 7/23/10

On July 23rd the mighty middle-finger to-the-establishment collective known as Rage Against the Machine delivered a volcanic set at their first Los Angeles show in ten years, at the Hollywood Palladium. The show’s purpose was to raise funds for Arizona organizations fighting the state’s new immigration law SB-1070. The benefiting organizations include community organizing group Puente, Arizona, as well the Florence Project, providing legal counsel and social services to immigrant communities. By the end of the night, the show raised consciousness of the issue, upward of $300,000, and a few thousand clenched fists.

However a few members of the band were later spotted by fans enjoying the performance of Alkaline Trio, the last band to play.

Robert Plant: Saenger Theatre, Mobile, AL 7/28/10

With only 12 American concert dates scheduled this year, Robert Plant walked out onto the stage of the historic Saenger Theatre in downtown Mobile, Alabama, with a gleam in his eye and a smile on his lips. Resuscitating one of his first bands, The Band Of Joy, Plant is moving forward by actually stepping backwards.

The Dead Weather: Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY 8/3/10

The Dead Weather’s final stop on their summer tour was Tuesday night under threatening skies in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park.  Thankfully the rain held off, but the thunder and lightning were in full effect on the stage.  Openers Harlem from Austin, TX played a nervous opening set of their stripped down fifties style surf/garage pop.  Focusing on their newest album, Hippies, they seemed to mumble and act a bit jittery until things picked up for final few tunes. This could be traced to Curtis O’Mara coming out from behind the drums to sing and play guitar on “Friendly Ghost” and “Faces”.

Warped Tour 2010: Merriweather Post Pavillion, Columbia, MD 7/20/10

Despite the encroachment of corporate sponsors (which in this case is not really as bad as it sounds) and the shift away from its old “punk rock summer camp” ethos that dominated my first run of attendance (1997-2002), the last three years have still been a lot of fun and I’ve seen far more good performances than bad.  Warped Tour 2010 was no different.

Lollapalooza 2010 Day Two : Grant Park, Chicago, IL 8/7/10

Gogol Bordello served as the rowdy greeters to day two of Lollapalooza 2010. Describing the band as gypsy punk sells them a bit short, though Ukrainian born bandleader Eugene Hütz has used the same words to describe his world circus ensemble. Hidden Track’s Benji Feldheim courageously covered Gogol Bordello and the rest of  this past weekend’s Lollapalooza festivities at Chicago’s Grant Park.  Head on over to Hidden Track Day Two coverage where Benji covers sets by Deer Tick, Metric, Social Distortion, Cut Copy and Green Day.  And for Day One coverage swing on over to this link where the likes of Drive By Truckers, Mavis Staples, Devo, Black Keys and The Strokes.

Furthur: Nokia Theatre, New York, NY 7/29/10

“Feels like I’ve been here before…” Well, one could certainly use that to represent Furthur’s two night run at Time Square’s Nokia Theater in New York City July 28 and 29th. While not attending the first night of Furthur’s eventful two night stay at the small theater, it was apparent that the whole crowd knew what happened the previous date. It was only a month since the band had last stopped in lower New York at Coney Island’s MCU Park and it appeared The Coney was looking much better than what these pair of shows would amount to.

Melissa Etheridge: Hard Rock Live, Biloxi, MS 7/30/10

In Melissa Etheridge’s hit song “Like The Way I Do”, she asks, “Does she know just how to shock and electrify and rock you?” On this blistering hot night in Biloxi, this woman did just that. Bringing forth a plethora of soul exposing songs skyrocketed to the brim by a red hot band featuring guitarist Peter Thorn, bassist Dan Rothchild, drummer Blair Sinta and keyboardist Kristopher Pooley.

Primus/Gogol Bordello: Williamsburg Waterfront, Brooklyn, NY, 7/30/10

It was a perfect summer night to watch two bands ply their wares on the waterfront of Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  While the venue could use more grass and less fractured concrete the views couldn’t have been sweeter, with the skyline visible to the artists and anyone who turned away from the stage for a second.

Gov’t Mule: Raleigh Ampitheater, Raleigh, NC 7/26/10

When Gov't Mule took the stage for their first show at Raleigh's new downtown amphitheatre on July 16, the audience's Friday night fun came to a wet, electrical end after only 4 songs. Returning to the venue for the make-up show on July 26, I wondered if the atmosphere of a muggy Monday could match the energy and anticipation that existed, albeit briefly, during the band's first attempt.
