Willie Nelson/Levon Helm: Radio City Music Hall, New York, NY 7/28/10

Two  living American treasures played one of America’s greatest concert venues on a humid summer night to the sold out house of all ages.  Both Willie Nelson and Levon Helm have lived through over 70+ years of success and tribulations, that they are still performing such passionate shows nightly is a testament to their impact on popular music and their burning desire as artists.

Lilith Fair: Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, Irvine, CA, 7/10/10

The other performers of Lilith Fair joined Sarah McLachlan for a cover of Patti Smith’s rocking hit, “Because the Night.”  At the closing of this event, it all seemed to come together nicely.  The tour may not be as popular or as dynamic as it once was, but it still carried McLachlan’s vision of celebrating women in music.

The Black Keys: Central Park Summerstage, New York, NY 7/27/10

Past tours and live offerings have found the group blasting out hard rocking/white boy blues, but tonight found them more confident, easing back and letting the songs (especially those played as a four piece) speak for themselves.  This came with a sacrifice of their metallic aggression and urgency but it is hard to argue with the quality of the Brothers tracks.

Evelyn Evelyn: Lucille Lortel Theater, New York, NY

I was invited last month to take in the curiosity that is Evelyn Evelyn at the Lucille Lortel Theater in Manhattan, so of course, I leapt at the chance to catch the Neville Twins on a rare public outing which didn’t involve stowing away someplace dangerous.

Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band: Beau Rivage, Biloxi, MS 7/18/10

Every few years Ringo Starr has assembled a hodgepodge of musicians to go out on the road with him and canoodle out fun songs from their past. The sold out performance in Biloxi recently proved that Ringo loves what he does and has fun doing it. He seemed so laid back, whipping off jokes while begging good-naturedly for everyone, “anyone please”, to buy his latest album.  The 2010 lineup of All Starrs include the great Edgar Winter, the still hot-fingered guitarist Rick Derringer, Richard Page of Mr. Mister, Gary Wright, former Romantic Wally Palmer, and Gregg Bissonette who drummed behind another famous front-man by the name of David Lee Roth.

The Gaslight Anthem: The Midland, Kansas City, MO 7/17/10

Finally…a rock band.  It seems one can get lost in 2010 trying to see a first-class, straight-ahead rock show, but if The Gaslight Anthem is coming your way, you have outlet to satisfy your rock cravings.  The New Jersey lineup featuring three guitars and a drummer came to Kansas City, Mo on the night of July 17, to play the majestic Midland Theater.  With its driving sound and yearning lyrics, the band played up the fact that everyone was out on a Saturday night having a good time—and the audience seemed to hold the attitude that a good time was being had on a Saturday night.

Minus the Bear: Granada, Lawrence, KS 7/13/10

Not even three months passed since Minus the Bear last came through Kansas, having opened for the Flaming Lips at their date in late April at Capitol Federal Park at Sandstone in Bonner Springs.  A little over 80 days later, and 30 miles down the Road, the Seattle quintet returned to the Sunflower State for a set at the Granada in Lawrence.  The cozier environs of the former movie theater on Massachusetts Street provided a more intimate, and fitting, setting than an amphitheater, allowing those in attendance to fully appreciate the sound the band rolled out on their new album, Omni.
