Disco Biscuits: Theater of Living Arts, Philadelphia, PA 3/15/10

Caught between a trance-fusion odyssey and a spectacular nonstop jam, the Disco Biscuits showed their endurance on the first of two intimate shows at the Theatre of Living Arts in Philadelphia on Monday night.  On the eve of the release of their much anticipated fifth studio release, Planet Anthem, the Biscuits served friends and loyal fans a three hour plus kickoff celebration to an extensive tour.

Civil Twilight: Theatre of Living Arts, Philadelphia, PA 3/10/10

Native to South Africa, Civil Twilight is a three-piece rock band consisting of two brothers Steven (vocal, bass, piano) and Andrew McKellar (guitar) and their friend Richard Wouters (drums) who they met during grade school in Cape Town.  Their sound displays direct influences of British and American rock bands such as The Police, Radiohead and Oasis, though their lyrics are deeply rooted in the humanism that exists within.

A rare mutual enthusiasm developed during this late winter/early spring night in New Hampshire while John Hiatt and The Combo played their extended single set. The group nurtured an exceptional bond of musical comradeship and community within the vintage Lebanon Opera House, the result of which was a palpable warmth in the room that had nothing to do with the temperature.

In the realm of the modern day jam band, Umphrey’s McGee is a unique species to that kingdom.  With unreal jam ability and non-stop touring, Umphrey’s has made their mark over the past decade as one of the most fan-devoted bands that knows no limits and truly lives for the music.   Saturday night, fans were medicated with a high dosage of Umph as the Chicago-based sextet came back to the Electric Factory in Philly for an intimate show.

Eric Clapton & Jeff Beck: Madison Square Garden 2/19/10

Jeff Beck stole the show from Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden February 19th. Or he would have if Slowhand had deigned to compete with him for the spotlight. But in a magnanimous gesture of generosity, similar to that which EC tender Steve Winwood two years ago around this time, the archetypal guitar hero preferred to let his successor in The Yardbirds take front and center the second of their two NY shows together. And to his tremendous credit, Jeff Beck made the most of his opportunity.

Citizen Cope: Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY 2/12/10

Stefon Harris with Imani Winds: Flynn Center,, Burlington VT, 2/5/10

When Stefon Harris joined Imani Wnds on the Mainstage of the Flynn February 5, he helped crystallize the intensity of their playing and  at the same time, elicited a greater level of improvisation from their playing.The effect of the collaboration might well have been even greater had Harris' own band been present, but even so, the performance was impressive.

Galactic : Theatre of Living Arts, Philadelphia, PA 2/4/10

To anyone who has doubted the strength of the music scene in the New Orleans post-Hurricane Katrina era, prepare yourself for a new tidal wave of funk that has been defining a different generation while still remaining loyal to its roots.  Last Thursday night, fans were prescribed a heavy dose of jazz-funk fused with sax and brass elements, when Galactic brought “The Big Easy” to the Theatre of Living Arts in Philadelphia.
