Elbow: Hall For Cornwall, Truro, United Kingdom 10/7/08

We have lots going for us down here in Cornwall; amazing countryside, mystical and rugged coastline, awesome beaches and (probably) the best surf in the UK. We also have an adequate, if not brilliant live music venue in the Hall for Cornwall in Truro  City (yes, City). What we don't have very often, is the opportunity to take in new and current bands or artists of any magnitude (sorry Jose but your amazing guitaring is not the ideal live performance).

Richard Shindell: Tractor Tavern, Seattle, WA 9/28/2008

There’s something comforting about Richard Shindell.  He makes folk-oriented rock’n roll, simple, lovely, melodic, and lyrically engaging.  A troubadour of sorts, this Buenos Aires resident (by way of New York City) manages an engaging ease that not only endears him to the audience, but that beautifully complements the salt-of-the-earth, storytelling nature of his songs.

Neko Case: The Pageant, St. Louis 9/24/08

“I’m so tired, I wish I was the moon tonight,” Neko Case sang midway through her breathtaking set at The Pageant in St. Louis. We’ve come to expect the best from Case over the years, and that’s what she continues to deliver in her live performances and albums. 2006’s Fox Confessor Brings the Flood showed off Case’s talents as not only a singer and songwriter, but also a capable producer of creating her own vision and bringing it to life.

Porter Batiste Stoltz w/ Page McConnell: Higher Ground, South Burlington, VT 9/27/08

Supporting their latest live album MOODOO, George Porter, Russell Batiste, and Brian Stoltz, along with Page McConnell in tow, rolled into Higher Ground to finish their brief but inspiring four night marathon tour. The Vermont stop on this tour was very appropriate as the live album they were supporting was recorded last November at Burlington's Club Metronome where McConnell made an impromptu surprise sit-in worthy of an official release.

My Morning Jacket: Marquee Theatre, Tempe, AZ 9/23/08

The two and a half hour show rocked tight during “Gideon,” jammed mysteriously throughout “Dondante” and playfully expressed the funky flavor the band is currently experimenting with during “Highly Suspicious.” My Morning Jacket might very well be the new Radiohead or Wilco – either way, they got a good thing going, lucky for all of us involved.

Railroad Earth: The Fillmore At Irving Plaza, New York, New York 9/6/08

Since the release of the great Amen Corner in June, Railroad Earth has been touring consistently, and the fall schedule proves no less ambitious. Though their 9/6 show at Irving Plaza—despite the lame marquee and barely renovated interior, I’ll never call it “The Fillmore”—didn’t jump out of the gate, the strong second set was a potent reminder of the band’s wholly satisfying live sound.

Tift Merritt/Matthew Ryan: Duck Room at Blueberry Hill, St. Louis, MO 9/11/08

Before Matthew Ryan and his band, MRVSS, took the stage at Blueberry Hill, he and his bassist, Brian Bequette, were joking with me and my wife, explaining how the headliner, Tift Merritt, was a “firecracker.” Ryan and his band seemed happy to be on the road with the energetic singer-songwriter, eager to share their music with a respectful room of people.
