Vans Warped Tour : Cataberry Park, Shokopee, MN 8/1/10

Alkaline Trio, Andrew W.K., Face to Face, The Casualties, Pennywise, Attack Attack, Four Year Strong, Mayday Parade, We The Kings, NeverShoutNever, Reel Big Fish, Alesana, and Left Alone are among the bands that played at this years Warped Tour. To the disappointment of the crowd, Sum 41 did not play. The lead singer, Deryck Whibley, was reportedly sick. However a few members of the band were later spotted by fans enjoying the performance of Alkaline Trio, the last band to play.

The Black Crowes: Croweology

With their long hair, beards and edgy blues sound, The Black Crowes have epitomized what a rock-n-roll band sounds and looks like. With a pending indefinite hiatus looming, the band recently decided to record a double album’s worth of acoustic rearrangements from their catalog. Croweology is an exquisite slice of Americana complete with acoustic bottleneck slide, mandolin, and fiddles all done Crowe-style that never loses its swagger.

Big Head Todd and The Monsters: Rocksteady

The challenge for a band with the longevity of Big Head Todd and The Monsters is how to subtly reinvent themselves without undermining the style they’ve cultivated during the course of their career. The Colorado group has struggled in that regard (see 2004’s Crimes of Passion), but Rocksteady is fresh in ways even the band might not expect.

Robert Plant: Saenger Theatre, Mobile, AL 7/28/10

With only 12 American concert dates scheduled this year, Robert Plant walked out onto the stage of the historic Saenger Theatre in downtown Mobile, Alabama, with a gleam in his eye and a smile on his lips. Resuscitating one of his first bands, The Band Of Joy, Plant is moving forward by actually stepping backwards.

The Dead Weather: Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY 8/3/10

The Dead Weather’s final stop on their summer tour was Tuesday night under threatening skies in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Thankfully the rain held off, but the thunder and lightning were in full effect on the stage. Openers Harlem from Austin, TX played a nervous opening set of their stripped down fifties style surf/garage pop. Focusing on their newest album, Hippies, they seemed to mumble and act a bit jittery until things picked up for final few tunes. This could be traced to Curtis O’Mara coming out from behind the drums to sing and play guitar on “Friendly Ghost” and “Faces”.

Faithless: The Dance

In a stroke of awesome with The Dance, Faithless has managed to continue that dance trend, and their careful balancing act. The opening song, “Not Going Home,” proves once again that they have the chops to own a dance floor, with what is sure to soon be (or already be) a memorable, bring-down-the-roof riff.

With all that Danger Mouse has tackled of late, he’s giving T-Bone Burnett a run for his co-production, co-mastermind skills. And unlike prior recent collaborations like Gnarls Barkley and Broken Bells, Dark Night of the Soul features Danger Mouse at his most haunting. Perhaps it’s an ironic show of foreboding that DM’s collaborator on this project – Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse committed suicide last March.

Despite the encroachment of corporate sponsors (which in this case is not really as bad as it sounds) and the shift away from its old “punk rock summer camp” ethos that dominated my first run of attendance (1997-2002), the last three years have still been a lot of fun and I’ve seen far more good performances than bad. Warped Tour 2010 was no different.

Gogol Bordello served as the rowdy greeters to day two of Lollapalooza 2010. Describing the band as gypsy punk sells them a bit short, though Ukrainian born bandleader Eugene Hütz has used the same words to describe his world circus ensemble. Hidden Track’s Benji Feldheim courageously covered Gogol Bordello and the rest of this past weekend’s Lollapalooza festivities at Chicago’s Grant Park. Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage

Like most documentaries, Beyond the Lighted Stage curates the course of Rush’s career through their album releases, revisiting how 2112 saved them from going back to their day jobs, while Permanent Waves got them on mainstream radio, and how the keyboard era of Grace Under Pressure through Presto alienated many fans but championed them as a band of progress and change. Although Rush doesn’t need an y new super fans, the power of Beyond the Lighted Stage will undoubtedly bring some new ones along for the ride.
