Furthur: Nokia Theatre, New York, NY 7/29/10

“Feels like I’ve been here before…” Well, one could certainly use that to represent Furthur’s two night run at Time Square’s Nokia Theater in New York City July 28 and 29th. While not attending the first night of Furthur’s eventful two night stay at the small theater, it was apparent that the whole crowd knew what happened the previous date. It was only a month since the band had last stopped in lower New York at Coney Island’s MCU Park and it appeared The Coney was looking much better than what these pair of shows would amount to.

Melissa Etheridge: Hard Rock Live, Biloxi, MS 7/30/10

In Melissa Etheridge’s hit song “Like The Way I Do”, she asks, “Does she know just how to shock and electrify and rock you?” On this blistering hot night in Biloxi, this woman did just that. Bringing forth a plethora of soul exposing songs skyrocketed to the brim by a red hot band featuring guitarist Peter Thorn, bassist Dan Rothchild, drummer Blair Sinta and keyboardist Kristopher Pooley.

Primus/Gogol Bordello: Williamsburg Waterfront, Brooklyn, NY, 7/30/10

It was a perfect summer night to watch two bands ply their wares on the waterfront of Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  While the venue could use more grass and less fractured concrete the views couldn’t have been sweeter, with the skyline visible to the artists and anyone who turned away from the stage for a second.

Gov’t Mule: Raleigh Ampitheater, Raleigh, NC 7/26/10

When Gov't Mule took the stage for their first show at Raleigh's new downtown amphitheatre on July 16, the audience's Friday night fun came to a wet, electrical end after only 4 songs. Returning to the venue for the make-up show on July 26, I wondered if the atmosphere of a muggy Monday could match the energy and anticipation that existed, albeit briefly, during the band's first attempt.

Los Lobos: Tin Can Trust

Without any overtly topical songs within these eleven tracks, Los Lobos manage to capture the precarious tenor of our times and their cover of the Grateful Dead’s “West LA Fadeway” is particularly resonant in that regard. Like the iconic San Francisco institution, his band from East LA offers respite that’s as self-renewing as their own creativity and the music that arises from it.

Willie Nelson/Levon Helm: Radio City Music Hall, New York, NY 7/28/10

Two  living American treasures played one of America’s greatest concert venues on a humid summer night to the sold out house of all ages.  Both Willie Nelson and Levon Helm have lived through over 70+ years of success and tribulations, that they are still performing such passionate shows nightly is a testament to their impact on popular music and their burning desire as artists.

Lilith Fair: Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, Irvine, CA, 7/10/10

The other performers of Lilith Fair joined Sarah McLachlan for a cover of Patti Smith’s rocking hit, “Because the Night.”  At the closing of this event, it all seemed to come together nicely.  The tour may not be as popular or as dynamic as it once was, but it still carried McLachlan’s vision of celebrating women in music.

Tea Leaf Green: Looking West

Music critics and fans alike have long droned on about the inability of musical road warriors – concert-focused bands like Tea Leaf Green – to produce a decent studio listen. While that onus doesn't apply to every album in the cosmos, it definitely applies to Tea Leaf Green's Looking West.

Shelter from the Storm: Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Years: by Sid Griffin

Up until now, the hands-down best book written about the Rolling Thunder tour has been On The Road With Bob Dylan by Larry “Ratso” Sloman. Sid Griffin’s new Shelter From The Storm approaches the Rolling Thunder tour in a very different manner, taking the journalist out of the mix, maintaining a respectable objectivity, and using a wider lens to take in the bigger picture of what was going on with Dylan during that time period.
