That new Who album of original material that’s supposedly been in the works might finally see the light of day after all. Pete Townshend was cleared Wednesday of possessing pornographic images of children. But the co-founder of The Who was given a formal police caution and placed on a register of sex offenders for accessing a Web site containing images of child abuse. Townshend was arrested in January on suspicion of making and possessing indecent images of children. The arrest was part of Operation Ore, an FBI-led crackdown on Internet child pornography. After a four-month investigation, London’s Metropolitan Police said Wednesday that the 57-year-old rocker “was not in possession of any downloaded child abuse images,” but had accessed a site containing such images in 1999. Pearl Jam has wrapped the first leg of its Riot Act tour on Saturday in State College, Pa., with a 36-song, three-hour-and-22-minute show that ranked as the longest concert of its career.
Pearl Jam has also recently begun selling a DVD of its Dec. 6 concert at Seattle’s Showbox club at shows on its current North American tour. for now, the DVD will only be available at shows and, beginning tomorrow (May 7), via the group’s official Web site. Since every show is filmed, additional DVDs are possible, including a comprehensive 2003 tour retrospective.
The Seattle DVD was shot by Liz Burns, Steve Gordon, and Kevin Shuss, the same team of crew members that supplied the bulk of the footage for Pearl Jam’s initial foray into DVD, “Touring Band 2000.” It does not include any bonus features but does offer a rare glimpse of Pearl Jam in a small club setting, performing 10 songs from its 2002 Epic album, “Riot Act.”
As it did on its 2000 tour, Pearl Jam is selling soundboard-sourced CD bootlegs of each 2003 show via its official Web site. Originally, the band had no plans to make any of the CDs available at retail. However, Pearl Jam has selected a Feb. 23 show in Perth, Australia, and a March 3 show in Tokyo to be issued commercially June 10 via Epic, to be followed by two as-yet-undetermined North American shows, one in July and another in August.
