Talib Kweli: The Brickhouse, Phoenix, AZ 8/10/07

The Brickhouse in downtown Phoenix was more like an oven on a recent Friday night.  Many people cleared the room before the headliner Talib Kweli even entered the stage, as the temperature rose well past 100 degrees.  Yet Kweli, with his predictably smooth rhymes and easy backbeats, managed to pull off a compelling show despite the elements and those who stayed were lyrically impressed.

Elvis Presley – : Viva Las Vegas

ith a title like Viva Las Vegas, I suspect many people's expectations are very low, associating this with the lounge lizard Elvis. However, that turns out to be an off-base assumption. Shiny Toy Guns – Music in the Wires

Shiny Toy Guns are an L.A. quarter who have been gaining steam playing sold out crowds here and abroad as well as at some top notch exclusive get-togethers (more on that later). Their alive style of new wave/guitar/pop/electronica creates dense textures both musically and vocally. Thanks to melodious male/female leads sung by Chad Petree and Carah Faye and complex song structures, Shiny Toy Guns are able to tackle issues of gender and fear in fresh ways testing at times and reassuring at others along the journey.
