Accolades don’t seem to stick to Doug Martsch. The singer, guitarist and songwriting force behind indie rockers Built to Spill has seen his share of praise in close to two decades with the band. He is often touted as one of the genre’s best guitarists, and the group has released six albums to critical acclaim – most recently 2006’s You in Reverse.

When the nominees for the New Groove Award were read at the recent Jammy Awards, Massachusetts’ The Brew got the biggest ovation from the crowd. After listening to their new album, Back To The Woods, I can understand why people are so into their music. The Brew has spent the last five years developing a unique songwriting style that combines flashy changes, beautiful lyrics and hooks you just can’t get out of your head. They also know how to kick out the jams behind Dave Drouin’s soaring guitar leads. 2008 looks to be the year that The Brew breaks into the bigtime. So now that I’ve opened the doors to it, I’ve selected the 1986 release by The Police, Every Breath You Take: The Singles. This is an interesting one because The Police are certainly a unique sounding trio of musicians and the vocals can be particularly challenging.

It only took seven years for the mainstream media to realize that there must be something to the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, which attracts crowds in excess of 80,000 people every year to Southwest Tennessee, that’s worth covering. Well, yesterday news broke that the music network Fuse had struck a three-year deal to be the “exclusive television partner” of the festival.
Since I’m not making it down their this year, I’m sure I’ll be glued to my TV set all weekend long for their coverage – though fist step is to figure out what channel Fuse is. Let’s also hope that the network that is is known for it’s love of all things emo and mainstream rock has no input in the lineup or else next year we might be seeing My Chemical Romance playing the Hot Topic Tent. But we have faith the fine folks at Superfly know better than that. Right?
