Volume 23: Neko Case

I’ve never had the opportunity to formally interview Neko Case, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a story that involves her. About six years ago, before one of her shows in St. Louis, I sat next to and talked with Ms. Case for a good two hours.

The Hold Steady: A Positive Rage

When a band sells out their esteemed hometown club, in this case, First Avenue in Minneapolis, it’s a sign that proclaims –“yeah, we made it.”  Such is the theme of the Hold Steady DVD/CD combo – A Positive Rage – where the crowds get bigger and the band is running fast on momentum.

Sara Watkins – Solo & Confident

The John Paul Jones-produced album, Watkins’ first as a solo artist, doesn’t lack in any area; instead, it soars with the star power that surrounds every note. Besides the aforementioned Jones, Watkins has help from Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, and Elvis Costello drummer Pete Thomas, to name just a few. After a couple listens, it will be evident that, although you might still wish for Nickel Creek to reform someday, you’ll also realize you have something sparkling and special in Sara Watkins all by herself.

Review: Telepath, Eliot Lipp and Joe Nice

When I saw the bill of Telepath, Eliot Lipp and Joe Nice on the schedule for April 9 at NYC’s Sullivan Hall, I knew I should attend this show. I was introduced to grime and dubstep through the music of Mathhead/Passions and Curses/Drop the Lime, co-founders of the Trouble and Bass collective. For a while, I have thought that the hippie culture might be saved from obscurity through the incorporation of dance music and electronica.

Jambands have been inflicted with stereotypes that no longer hold true. The word jamband does not work anymore and could be used synonymously with “improvisational music” or “live music.” Dance music serves the purpose of relieving stress and creating a sense of well being, which is the same thing that drives the live music industry. What these three acts all have in common is that they are all skilled and unique musicians who put on a great live show.

Musicians like Telepath, Eliot Lipp and Joe Nice are contributing to our happy family of live music lovers, helping to bring good music to a new audience made up of brightly colored, flat brimmed freaks, in their own right. Though this culture has a slightly stronger emphasis on consumerism, it might balance out the crusty, radical hippie ideals that got this music tossed aside in the first place. Though it’s not like it ever really mattered what the mainstream thought anyway.

Friday for the Foodies: Bubby’s Midnight Brunch Returns to NYC Tonight!

As I was going through my twitter feed today, I came across this:

AlwaysHungry First Look: Bubby’s Midnight Brunch Menu

Once again, Always Hungry brings us the goods on where to eat in NYC. We all get out of live shows after midnight or way after sometimes and we want to go somewhere to grab a bite. I am hoping to check the brunch out in the near future, maybe on 4/20 after the Pete Rock show at the Hudson Hotel.

This part really whetted my appetite:

Bubby’s Midnight Brunch offers a saving grace in the form of Cheese Fries, Fried Chicken & Waffles and Pibil “Pork” Tacos. From midnight-to-8am, stacks of pancakes will be stuffed with blueberries, chocolate chips or caramelized bananas and walnuts, and I ask you, what’s better than a trifecta of Benedicts to help subdue that one drink too many?

Bubby’s Restaurant Bar-Bakery
120 Hudson St
New York, NY 10013
(212) 219-0666

You can see the full brunch menu here

Here’s what else I came across that piqued my foodie interest this week:

The Gowanus Yacht Club reopens today!

Ed Levine Eats gives us a First Look at the New Yankees Stadium Food as well as NYC Food Events for the Weekend and Beyond
