Phish @ Deer Creek – Night One: Setlist

Phish Summer Tour 2010 moved on to Noblesville this evening for another summer night at Deer Creek. Tonight’s performance featured two sets that were about as different as two sets in one show can be.

Runaway Jim kicked things off before Punch followed. Here’s where the troubles began as guitarist Trey Anastasio fudged a few lines and tried to end the song earlier than it should have been ended. A few mistakes here and there are part of the experience but Sample, Horn and Sugar Shack all suffered from trainwreck moments and they seemed to have forgotten how to end Cars Trucks Buses. The band didn’t seem visibly flustered and pulled things together for Wolfman’s and the difficult Time Turns Elastic. Trey led the way on Wolfman’s firing off one blistering run of notes after another – a highlight of the set.

Pretty quickly it was obvious the second set would be a completely different animal than the underwhelming opening stanza. Second set opener Drowned continues its role as a quick springboard to improvisation. Page McConnell switched between piano for the rocking start, organ to help push the jam outwards and synth once the improv got out there. All four members gelled during the last few minutes of the jam and no one member was leading the ambient exploration that marked the all-too-soon end of Drowned. Gotta Jibboo came out of nowhere and was a typical ripping version.

Last Week’s Sauce: August 2nd – 8th

The nature of this weekly feature is that it highlights the quick turnaround of recordings made of live concerts. As the years have gone on, it has become easier to turn around these tapes faster and faster. And with our point-and-shoot cameras getting better every year, it doesn’t take a whole lot of effort to shoot some good video and upload it to YouTube. What is really fucking impressive about this week’s selections is that there are two different pro-shot videos officially released to accompany our audio. And one of them took place two days ago!

[Thanks to NeilyBoy for this week’s photo]

And we continue to take all the selected tracks, normalize them, create some simple fades and put it into one easy to download MP3 for you.

Artist & Title: American Babies – Winter War Games
Date & Venue: 2010-08-08 House of Blues – Atlantic City, NJ
Taper & Show Download: Unknown

In this era of frequently selling live concerts over the Internet, the freely available SBD patch is becoming somewhat of a rarity. So I was excited to see this show up with the SBD source on the Live Music Archive as I did my weekly search for audio from the previous week. It’s been a busy summer for Tom Hamilton & American Babies playing shows with Big Light, Tea Leaf Green, and Umphrey’s McGee. This track, was released on the Weight of the World – EP in April of this year. American Babies next play the Liberate Music & Arts Festival in Sheldon, VT on Friday August 20th.

The Valuable Life Lessons of Anthony Kiedis

No matter how much you listen to a band, read their interviews or whittle your workday away on their message boards, there’s something about reading a biography, especially an autobiography, that takes your knowledge to an entirely new level. When written well, hearing the story from the horse’s mouth makes it feel like you were there from the beginning and gives real insight to who these people really are, how they interact, what they really care about and, of course, how they came up with the music you love.

As someone who has read a fair amount of music bios over the years, spanning the gamut from Ben Fong-Torres’ Gram Parsons biography Hickory Wind to Alice Cooper’s autobiography Golf Monster, I can say with easy honesty, that Anthony Kiedis’ Scar Tissue (with Larry Sloman) is without question the best I’ve ever read. In fact, it’s probably the quickest read of any book of any book I’ve ever read. The pages turn themselves. A lot of this comes from the fact that Kiedis’ life is nothing short of fascinating, but it’s also due to the fact that the writing is fluid and wildly honest, giving open accounts of his addictions, failed attempts at love, and personal dynamics within one of our generation’s few cutting edge big bands.

So many times throughout the course of this journey, Anthony reveals interesting factoids, anecdotes, and philosophies, so I thought I’d share some of the more compelling ones below. Heads up for anyone who may still read the book as this is your SPOILER ALERT, but this list is just the tip of the iceberg, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

The Secret to Aging Gracefully – Back when the Chili Peppers recorded Freaky Styley, they packed up and moved the band to Detroit to record and live with George Clinton of Parliament-Funkadelic. Of all the valuable philosophies and life lessons the band learned from the hairy funk architect, the one that sticks out most is his recipe for aging gracefully, despite years and years of extremely hard partying. What’s the secret? Prune juice.

The Dead Weather: Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY 8/3/10

The Dead Weather’s final stop on their summer tour was Tuesday night under threatening skies in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park.  Thankfully the rain held off, but the thunder and lightning were in full effect on the stage.  Openers Harlem from Austin, TX played a nervous opening set of their stripped down fifties style surf/garage pop.  Focusing on their newest album, Hippies, they seemed to mumble and act a bit jittery until things picked up for final few tunes. This could be traced to Curtis O’Mara coming out from behind the drums to sing and play guitar on “Friendly Ghost” and “Faces”.
