Mike Gordon Shares a Behind The Scenes Look at Phish Tour Using Twitter

Last week we checked in on Phish Tour via Twitter, noting the stellar job the guest tweeters for YEMBlog (@YEMBlog) have been doing and praising the official Phish From the Road feed (@Phish_FTR) for giving fans a behind-the-scenes look into what the band is up to when not on stage. While @YEMBlog continued to provide colorful and descriptive tweets from the shows, @Phish_FTR basically stopped tweeting outside of live setlist updates.

But just today @Phish_FTR and bassist Mike Gordon (@Mike_Gordon) started tweeting from Darien Lake where the band takes the stage tonight. We have only one thing to say about the twitpics and inside looks at living on the road these tweets provide: MORE.

Preview: Free Summer Concerts In NYC

The summer concert season is upon us and the Hidden Track staff knows that it’s virtually impossible for us to afford every show we want to hit, and still be able to pay our insanely expensive New York City rents. Luckily for us, there are a plethora of fantastic free concerts throughout the summer that don’t cost a dime. We decided to weed through all the listings and present to you our 4th Annual NYC Free Summer Concert Picks. Let’s take a look…

HT Recommends: Medeski, Martin & Wood / Josh Roseman & The King Froopy All Stars / Jim Black’s AlasNoAxis

Where: Central Park Summerstage

When: Saturday, June 11, 7:00PM

Official Info: The trio’s combination of jazz, funk, “avant-noise” and a million other musical impulses is nearly impossible to classify. Wide open: That’s the phrase that describes Medeski Martin & Wood’s musical sensibilities, attitude, and the spirit of adventure that the band has pursued for over two decades. The trio’s combination of jazz, funk, “avant-noise” and a million other musical impulses is nearly impossible to classify. Although the “jazz spirit” has been ever-present in their songs, the group has won over a substantial audience that is packed with alternative-rock lovers, jam-band aficionados and jazz heads.

The King Froopy All-Stars is an electric 12-piece project from celebrated trombonist and composer Josh Roseman. Featuring some of the edgiest voices harvested from Brooklyn’s new jazz scene, this electro-acoustic supergroup focuses world beat, spontaneous improvisation, dub, satire and psychedelia through Roseman’s unconventional lens. Able to simultaneously compel both your feet and the neocortex, this is what AAJ has called, “jazz-tinged party music with a master’s degree.”

AlasNoAxis is the culmination of famed jazz drummer, Jim Black’s years of experience on stage and in the studio with some of the world’s greatest composers and improvisors. The band’s 2000 self-titled debut, established a new standard for the cross-fertilization of rock, electro-acoustic and jazz, becoming the standard-bearer of “future jazz” and thrilling listeners with its powerhouse combination of virtuosity, rock emotion and noisy catharsis.

Other Free Shows At Central Park Summerstage: 6/22 – Reggie Watts / Natasha Leggero, 6/25 – Lee Fields & The Expressions / Fitz & The Tantrums / Andreya Triana / Rich Medina, 6/26 – Hugh Maskela / Freshly Ground / Somi, 6/29 – Comedy Central Park w. Joseph Arthur: The Graduation Ceremony

The Graduation Ceremony grabs the listener from the start with its emotional immediacy, the flow from one beautifully-crafted song to the next. It doesn’t break new ground, specifically; long-time appreciators of Joseph Arthur will find much here reminiscent of past work. For example, the album’s second track bears beautiful memory (and nearly a guitar riff) of his earlier work “Honey and the Moon,” from Redemption’s Son; that song, by this writer’s ear, is a true gem of melodic, folk-inspired pop, and “Horses” successfully follows in its footsteps.

Foals – Ambitious Sonic Voyagers

After the critical success of their first album, British quintet Foals are currently touring to promote their sophomore effort, Total Life Forever. The album marks a maturing from their relatively conventional sounding first album, Antidote, to a fully original collection of new compositions. While each song on the album has different textural and rhythmic qualities, lead singer Yannis Philippakis’ haunting voice and the tightness of the ensemble run throughout the entire album.  Just as the band is about to enter into a conventional chord progression or time signature, they introduces a new sonic quality or feel that keeps the album fresh and impossible to turn off.  Glide spoke with bassist Walter Gervers about “Total Life Forever” and Foal’s current tour.

Chamberlin: Bitter Blood

Forgive Chamberlin if their debut album seems to end too quickly. The band seems to be lacking in patience. They had only performed in front of friends before deciding to record an album and had only played a handful of shows in Vermont before going on a national tour with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Though the 9-track album is brief, Bitter Blood sounds like the painstaking work of a veteran band rather than an impromptu recording by new band-mates.
