3GM: SXSW Day 2 – Energy is Everything

At South by Southwest, sometimes you ignore your schedule completely and end up in places you wouldn’t have thought about going and doing things you wouldn’t normally do. You might wait in line for an hour for free booze and popcorn at the Fader Fort or you might find yourself in a private party thrown by Entertainment Weekly, again, drinking free booze during a funk show. When you should have been trying to get on camera at Widespread Panic’s show, you might instead wander off course a bit to a rather unknown wine bar and discover a singer who turns Gangstas Paradise into a melody played on glockenspiel. There is also a chance that you’d end up at a DJ set on a smoky dance floor or seeing a good band play in a small bar with a shitty sound system. Also, we saw Wu Tang, and the rumors are true. They ain’t nothing to fuck with.

Even without a plan, we knocked a couple more items off our scavenger hunt. Check it out how we did…

We saw 19 acts perform yesterday and we weren’t even trying. However, our feet feel like whatever happens to pregnant women. Here’s our list:

Friday For the Foodies: Montreal, Part 3 – Nose to Tail dinner at DNA Restaurant

If you haven’t been keeping up with my latest series of posts from another recent epic food trip, this posting is the third of four planned postings from my trip to Montreal from Friday 2/25 to Sunday 2/27.  So far I have written up my lunch on Saturday 2/26 in the posting Friday For the Foodies: Montreal, Part 1 – Schwartz’s Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen and my lunch on Sunday 2/27 in the posting  Friday For the Foodies: Montreal, Part 2 – Cabane à Sucre Au Pied de Cochon.  Today’s posting is the follow-up to the article I wrote and posted on Friday 2/25 called F4tF: Guts to Eat the Guts aka Nose to Tail in which I explained that I would be eating a Nose to Tail dinner at DNA restaurant in Montreal cooked by Chef  Chris Cosentino of Incanto in San Francisco and Chef/Owner Derek Dammann of DNA restaurant in Montreal.

We secured an early reservation for DNA and 5 of us headed over to the restaurant which is situated in Old Montreal.  We decided on going all-in, opting for the Nose to Tail with wine pairings.  What follows is my recollection of that evening in pictures and words.

Just a word of warning to those of you that may be squeamish to these kinds of meals, if this stuff turns you off please click away.  If not, sit back, relax and ask yourself “Would I have had the guts to do this?” I did!

10 Questions With Toubab Krewe

It's only been a little over 5 years since the eclectic, world-fusion funk of Asheville's Toubab Krewe initially got together.  In that short time, the expansive instrumental unit has managed to meld many global styles and earthly tempos into the mix.  It could easily teeter into the laziness of the 'world' category, but their craft as a whole – it's safe to say that during that half-decade, they've tirelessly solidified themselves as the only ones who truly do what they do.  With a new album out and a busy summer ahead, we pulled the busy troop aside for a quick 10 question session.
