Jaimoe is quite proud of his band and has been traveling the country playing in small jazz clubs and opening for the Gregg Allman Band during their spring tour. But more new music is in the offering. “We’ve got five more songs in the can that didn’t make the album so we’ve got a good place to start from”.
On “Phantom In The Valley” lead singer/guitarist/song-writer Ethan Miller sings about “Dusty notes of music/at the far end of the world!” but you don’t need to travel all that way to find Howlin’ Rain’s inspiration. This is a big meaty album, a return to arena rock pomp and excess; knowing that in advance will clue people into the pluses and minuses fairly early of Howlin’ Rain’s newest release The Russian Wilds.
Will Jeff Mangum write again? Will fans of Neutral Milk Hotel ever hear more original songs? It may be highly unlikely in both cases; but then again, most would have said the same about Mangum’s return to music.
