Neil Young’s second record of the year with Crazy Horse, Psychedelic Pill, is an excellent piece of work. With some slightly more astute editing, this long-awaited album might well rank with the best Young’s ever done. A collection of traditionals and covers, the previous 2012 release, Americana, is permeated with a ramshackle charm that’s in marked contrast to the studied approach of its successor. Still, this record of original material has, as its foundation, the natural chemistry between Young with his beloved backing band.
“There’s really not much to say,” Geoff Tate politely says when asked about the Queensryche drama of a few months ago. It’s understandable that the voice of the thinking-man’s metal band would now rather talk about things of a more up-beat nature. The separation from the band he helped mold has been a painful trek and he is more than ready to turn his attention to the more positives in his life.
As confident on accordion, saw and banjo as he is on keyboard or guitar; Nicolay’s music fuses elements of all his influences through literature, music, film and travel, but on his Kickstarter-funded third release Do the Struggle he goes to even darker places courtesy of industrial beats and an overall incensed theme.
