Disco Biscuits – Bisco Inferno Weekend: May 26 – 28

For some Disco Biscuits fans, there is no greater treat in the world than to watch the group perform at Red Rocks. Arguably the best outdoor amphitheatre in the country,  Red Rocks is a venue that brings a magic all its own to each show. Along with the natural beauty of the venue, the Biscuits have been putting in extra effort to make this weekend as special for their fans as possible and they are finally beginning to succeed.

Like most bands, the Biscuits are at their best when touring heavily, so with only 12 tDB shows in 2011 leading up to Bisco Inferno weekend, there was some skepticism and apprehension about whether they would play well. Fans hoped it wouldn’t take too long for the group to start firing on all cylinders. With two shows at the Ogden leading up to the finale at Red Rocks, there wound up being plenty of time for the band get their groove back.

May 26 – Ogden Theatre

Unfortunately, the first show of the weekend on Thursday night was a bit of a letdown. The first set was uneventful save for a slick segue into Shem-Rah Boo, which featured a neat jam out of the middle before returning to Voices Insane. The Overture was a treat, but oddly placed. The second set was somewhat redeeming, with a highly exploratory Orch Theme that featured several beautiful themes and peaked more than once. Tricycle > Mr. Don also featured some excellent playing, most notably from keyboardist Aron Magner.

Set 1: The Very Moon > Voices Insane > Shem-Rah Boo1 > Voices Insane, Neck Romancer, The Overture

Set 2: Park Ave. > Vassillios > Orch Theme > Tricycle > Mr. Don, Shelby Rose

Encore: Mulberry’s Dream

Conspirator: Peter’s Room at the Roseland Theatre, Portland, OR 2/9/11

For only the second time in ten years members of the Disco Biscuits stepped onto the fertile ground of the Pacific Northwest. The sane ones of us here in Portland, Oregon and the Northwest at large have long given up hope of Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner’s titanic livetronica innovators returning to our beautiful corner of the country but for one night at Peter’s Room inside the Roseland Theater we were fortunate to have another chance to dance with their side project Conspirator.

Super Bowl XLV – Weird Beards & Long Hair

As we gear up for the annual day of gluttony otherwise known as Super Bowl Sunday, we couldn’t help but notice the uncanny similarities between a number of players on the rosters of the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers and those of the faces you’ll find at any number of summer music festivals. Sure plenty of players let their facial hair grow out, or let their manes go uncut for the playoffs, but a quick glance at the sidelines of both teams will find as many weird beards and long-haired players as you’d expect to see at a My Morning Jacket show.

So we here at Team HT decided to pick some of our favorite players that are letting their freak flag fly, and imagined where and to whom you might find these gridiron warriors rocking out to when their season is over…

Pittsburgh Steelers

Brett Keisel

Who Is Brett: Defensive End who has become a cult hero in Pittsburgh, inspiring the Fear The Beard movement and is quite possibly one step away from being found on Passed Out Wookies if the Steelers win the Super Bowl.

Where You Might Find Him: Ever since that transcendent night at Big Cypress, Keisel has become a full on grizzled tour vet, catching as many Phish shows as he can each year before training camp. When the Phab Phour rolls through the ‘burgh for a stop at the First Niagara Pavilion (which Keis will always call Star Lake), you’ll find his dirt-caked feet in patchwork overalls raging Page side with his Lushington sign, and post-show slinging some of the tastiest veggie burritos and headiest craft beers around.

Disco Biscuits: Tower Theater, Philadelphia, PA 12/30/10

With hundreds of multi-colored balloons waiting at bay near the ceiling of the Tower Theatre, fans patiently awaited the arrival of the Disco Biscuits as they returned to Philadelphia the night before New Year’s Eve to close out what has been a fantastic 2010, and a hectic final week, with back to back nights in their hometown.  To complicate matters in a time of great celebration, the band experienced a devastating blow when drummer Allen Aucoin was treated and hospitalized earlier in the week for a serious asthma attack thus being sidelined for the New York and Philadelphia string of shows.

Allen Out For Biscuits’ T5 Run: Sammy, Greenfield, Deitch and Shearer In

Depending on how the next three nights go, 2010 may be known as the year the Disco Biscuits got by with a little help from their friends. Nine months after Chris Michetti and Tommy Hamilton came to the band’s rescue when current guitarist Jon “The Barber” Gutwillig broke his wrist, former drummer Dr. Sam Altman and three of the top drummers in the scene will sub for Allen Aucoin, who suffered a severe asthma attack yesterday, at the Biscuits’ Terminal 5 shows on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

When Allen Met Sammy

Lotus drummer Mike Greenfield will be behind the kit tomorrow night, Adam Deitch of Break Science and Pretty Lights and The New Deal’s Darren Shearer will share drumming duties on Tuesday, while original Disco Biscuits drummer Dr. Sam Altman will return to his former seat on Wednesday night. Allen’s doctors have cleared him to perform on December 30th and 31st at the Tower Theater. READ ON on for the statement from tDB’s website…
