Warren Haynes – Three Bands & Counting (INTERVIEW)

He's consistently a good interview, but no matter how many times you get the privilege, you come away with the same sense of wonderment: Warren Haynes is mentally organized. Granted, he's a lot of things, and you have to expect as much, given how many projects he's been juggling for how many decades now—and how in the next six months alone he'll be on tour with Gov't Mule and the once-again-reconstituted Dead, as well as play solo shows and hold it down with the Allmans for the just-confirmed 2009 Beacon Theater run.

McDowell Mountain Music Festival: Scottsdale, AZ 4/25-26/08

What is it about festivals these days? How come every-time I visit a music related blog that’s not hyping Vampire Weekend, they are announcing another festival whose lineup card is bragging “my lineup can kick your lineup’s ass.” And more likely than a $5 bottle of Aquafina, that lineup will include Flaming Lips, NIN and Wilco.

There's a lot to like on Mighty High and a lot to discard. Even haters of the CD–some Mule fanatics have called it un-listenable, and they're not totally wrong, should feel comfortable knowing the band has no plans for a holding pattern with this musical output. Trust in that.

Gov’t Mule: Central Park Summerstage, New York, NY – 9/6/06

After reading my review of the Allman Brothers Band show we attended just a few weeks ago, my buddy DJ had just one complaint. "They're not going to stretch things out like they do at the Beacon. You just can't expect that." While the ABB may have showed such restraint in New Jersey last month, I am proud to report that Gov't Mule did no such thing as they kicked off their "Mighty High" tour at the Central Park Summerstage on September 6.

Gov’t Mule : McCarren Pool, Brooklyn, NY 9/09/2006

Over the years, Warren has evolved from a serious sideman to a mature bandleader who has endured the loss of band mates, shuffling of Jamband franchiseslike the Allmans & 'The Dead' to finally come out of his own Deep End into the rebirth of the Mule.
