We’re eagerly anticipating You Are Not Alone the new album from legendary gospel and soul singer Mavis Staples, which is being produced by Wilco front man Jeff Tweedy. The album,
This past weekend I was explaining the concept of Last Week’s Sauce to a friend of mine and they said, “Oh, so it’s like a Podcast of music that happened the previous week.” I explained yes that it was, but that I don’t compile all the tracks into one file, I just download them…do some edits and normalizing and we embed them individually on our site. Then it occurred to me that it would be just a little more work to essentially make this a Podcast as well. So for the first time this week, you can download all of this week’s selections in one easy to transport MP3. Click here to download this week’s selections. The rest of the piece will continue as it always has, with the audio embedded directly into the piece individually.

Artist & Title: Jackie Greene – I Don’t Live In A Dream
Date & Venue: 2010-03-07 SPACE, Evanston IL
Taper & Show Download: arzjr
Jackie Greene is on the road in a slightly more stripped down setup than you are used to seeing from him live. The shows are being billed as the Jackie Greene Acoustic trio, and he has regularly been performing a few songs solo acoustic as well. He certainly has the song catalog to effectively pull this off. Greene plays tonight at Old Rock House in St. Louis.

As we eagerly await My Morning Jacket’s return from a year-plus hiatus, Jim James has kept himself busy during the downtime. First as a member of Monsters Of Folk and
es, it was Christmas with the Tweedys as the now beloved Wilco front-man travelled to the Grand Canyon with his wife Susie, sons Sam and Spencer to spend the holidays with Tweedy’s sister. So for us lucky Arizona residents Tweedy decided to book a single gig at Phoenix’s Orpheum Theatre, for a reason he explained as “a way to pay for his family's visit to his sister's house for the holidays.” Whether or not that is true, it doesn’t matter – it is sure as hell beats The Nutcracker.
Jay Farrar seems to be getting a lot of musical inspiration from the past these days. As we’ve previously reported, the Son Volt front man teamed up with DC4C’s Ben
Tickets for this year’s Austin City Limits Festival sold out weeks ago, but those willing to work can exchange three five-hour shifts & a $15 application fee for a weekend pass to the event. Visit workexchangeteam.com for more details and to apply for the ACL and/or Festival 8 teams.
In other ACL news, the schedule for the festival – which takes place in Austin’s Zilker Park on October 2 – 4 – has just been released.
Let’s take a look at some other stories we’ve missed this week…
This album will be a “live summary” of the concerts given by the ex-Beatle in July, while he played for the very first time at the Citi Field Stadium in New-York City for three memorable nights, on July 17th,18th and 21st 2009.
This CD album is likely to be sold in a box set containing not only a live album but also the DVD of the concert. [via maccablog]
Pedro Loopez is a short collection of tracks assembled by Brock, reminiscent of his previous release “Instrumentals & Incidentals,” this collection is a bit more natural sounding with less midi and more cowbell. The original track files will be offered up as well during the coming weeks so Brock’s fans can assemble their own creations to listen to. Look for an announcement about that soon. [via TheRevButler]
“I know Jeff just a little bit,” Cash tells Spinner. “I’ve met him a few times and I’m a huge fan of not only Wilco but Golden Smog and all the rest of it, and it was just a great honor for him to do this.”

Finally, anyone who thought guitarist John Kadlecik’s successful stint with Bobby and Phil as part of last weekend’s Furthur shows would take away from Dark Star Orchestra’s never-ending touring schedule needs to think again. The DSO are playing a full slate of shows starting tomorrow night in Seattle and running through the just announced New Year’s Eve show at Ram’s Head Live in Baltimore. READ ON for more details…
“Once I thought, without a doubt, I had it all figured out,” Jeff Tweedy of Wilco sings on “Solitaire,” a standout track off Wilco (the album). Yeah, I could have picked a hundred or so other lines by Tweedy to highlight here—that’s what makes writing about his words so difficult. But, that’s the one that speaks loud and clear to me today. Because about eight years ago, Jeff Tweedy taught me that, when it comes to music, you never have it all figured out.
The subject matter of this week’s selection is something I think a lot of our readers can relate to. On the surface, this tune – a selection off The Beatles 1966 album Revolver, could innocently be about the feeling of being woken up too early in the morning…Then again, it could be about drugs. And as my friend Dan likes to say, “If you think it might be about drugs, it’s probably about drugs.”
While dissecting the lyrics, I found it humorous how polite the narrator of the song is in reference to being woken up early, specifically the number of times he says, “Please”. I’m not sure if I know anyone who would be this polite given the circumstances.
In a famous 1966 interview that John Lennon did with Maureen Cleave, she said of John,
He can sleep almost indefinitely, is probably the laziest person in England. ‘Physically lazy,’ he said. ‘I don’t mind writing or reading or watching or speaking, but sex is the only physical thing I can be bothered with any more’.
So, the song is at least to some degree, autobiographical.

Bathory: This is likely the most International edition of Cover Wars to date. Bathory, for those of you don’t know about them (like me yesterday), is a Swedish band often credited as creating the first “Black Metal” album. Source: In Memory Of Quorthon Vol III
