Now in its fifth year, Bonnaroo has hit an unparalled stride. With stellar performances, numerous sit-ins and a festival setting unlike anywhere else, the annual trek to Manchester, Tennesee has become an essential summer roadtrip.

ooking like Mike Nesmith’s fan club, this five piece hit the stage just before midnight in silly wool hats, but the sweltering club had already served to warm them up. They collided into the music sans introduction, if there was any doubt about the energy and excitement in the room, it was obliterated under the first notes of the majestic show opener “Say Something.” The band who goes by their coded names are: TAXI: guitar, vocals, TABLES: bass, vocals, TEXT: keyboards, guitar and vocals, TURBO: trapset, vocals, THANKS: guitars, vocals.

In the beginning stages of a lengthy three-month tour that stretches from Toronto to Australia, Oberst and his band took the stage following openers Coco Rosie and Tilly and the Wall. Representing his great record label, Saddle Creek, and backed by a six-person band of relatively fresh faced musicians, Bright Eyes appeared as a band of “gifted kids.”
