Umphrey’s McGee’s guitarists teamed up for their annual acoustic holiday show in Chicago.
Although Dixon’s piano/improvisational chops have been known for stretching it out a tad far (2002’s On A Rolling Ball), this self titled release by The Gabe Dixon Band shines in the leader’s concise songwriting and spirited harmonies. Bandmates Winston Harrison (bass) and Jano Rix (drums) provide a session element that gives the songs a polished gleam.
“The possibilities are endless,” writes Herbie Hancock in his latest liner notes to Possibilites. The album features ten inspired Hancock collaborations including: John Mayer, Santana and Angelique Kidjo, Christina Aguilera, Paul Simon, AnnieLennox, Sting, Jonny Lang and Joss Stone, Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan, Raul Midon, andTrey Anastasio.
Concert attendees eager for a Bruce Hornsby Greatest Hits show were probably disappointed amidst his performance at the Flynn Theater. After playing a majority of his songs countless times over the years, Hornsby reworked his most recognizable radio hits as delicate compositions – complete with vocal improvisation and new melodies – allowing his band to play outside the lines, with a renowned song book that stretches his entire career.
