30 years ago today, on Halloween 1989, The Grateful Dead released what would be their 13th and final studio album – Built to Last. The nine-song album is noteworthy for its contributions by the late keyboardist Brent Mydland who wrote and sang lead on four songs – all of which are in collaboration with Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow. Although many of the songs haven’t had the time to grow as timeless pieces in the Dead catalog, the production value and musical stylings are very “late 80’s”- a favorite time period for many a Deadhead who considered the touring years of 1988 thru summer 1990, some of The Dead’s strongest years.
