30 years ago today (9/10/90), in one of the first legit transformations from hip hop to film and tv, rapper Will Smith (known to many as The Fresh Prince) made his television debut in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Smith played himself as a Philly street kid, who gets sent to live with his wealthy Aunt and “Uncle Phil” in Bel-Air. The show led Smith to become more than DJ Jazz Jeff’s clever sidekick but, a blockbuster movie star (Men in Black, Independence Day, Ali), and his rap career took a backseat to the movie offers.
