40 years ago today (1/19/82), years after punk first waved its simple yet powerful chords, Bad Religion released its debut album How Could Hell Be Any Worse? Built around the cornerstone of Greg Graffin, Brett Gurewitz, and Jay Bentley, this debut showed how and what would become one of punk’s most important bands. Of interesting note about the debut: future guitarist Greg Hetson, who was in Circle Jerks during this time, provided a guitar solo on “Part III” and this would be the last album for Bentley bass for six years, until 1988’s Suffer.
