40 Years Ago Today – Prince Kicks Off ‘Purple Rain ‘ Tour

40 years ago today (11/4/84), Prince kicked off his Purple Rain tour with a show at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena. Following up on the success of his sixth studio album Purple Rain and his 1984 film of the same name, the tour marked the live debut of the band now named the Revolution as Wendy Melvoin made her appearance as the new guitarist in Prince’s band, taking over for the departed Dez Dickerson. Watch Prince perform “I Would Die For 4 U” in Landover, MD a few weeks after the kickoff.
