70 Years Ago Today – First Rock Concert ‘Moondog Coronation Ball’ Held In Cleveland, But Shut Down After One Song

70 years ago today (3/21/52), the “first rock” concert was held in Cleveland, OH Cleveland when the Moondog Coronation Ball is held at the Cleveland Arena. Organized by the WJW DJ Alan Freed (“Moondog” on the air), it is shut down after one song, and became the world’s first rock and roll concert that was never to be. The acts were to include Paul Williams Hucklebuckers, Tiny Grimes Rockin’ Highlanders, The Dominoes featuring Billy Ward, Varetta Dillard and Danny Cobb.Check out this YouTube reenactment of the show as it was supposed to play out..
