Weekly RecommNeds: Dylan Ryan Sand / Joseph Tawadros

Would you stand up and walk out on me?

Dylan Ryan Sand: Sky Bleached

One of my favorite jazz albums of the 1Q 2013 thus far is this one from this Californian guitar-bass-drum trio. First off, great band name. Being both the drummer and the composer/bandleader, Dylan Ryan is a rarity, but his rhythmic approach to the music gives it that something extra. But it’s his friends in the band that help make it special, the guitar especially channeling the unique laid-back aggression of Bill Frisell. This is the good stuff.

Joseph Tawadros: Chameleons of the White Shadow

According to Wikipedia, Joseph Tawadros is an “oud virtuoso from Australia.” According to his latest album, he is a multi-ethnic jammer who convinced some pretty talented friends to help him in the studio. This record is one awesome track after another punctuated by combinations and permutations of heavy hitters like Bela Fleck on banjo, Roy Ayers on vibes and Joey DeFrancesco on organ. Thanks to PZ for the recommendation!
