The Weekly RecommNeds: Thao and the Get Down Stay Down + Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside

You made a fool of everyone…

Thao and the Get Down Stay Down: We The Common

“All they wanted was a villain… all they got was me.” So sings Thao Nguyen on the opening title track of her superb new album right before “The Get Down Stay Down” launch into an incredibly infectious, groove mixing banjo and handclap rhythms. From there it’s one perfectly off-kilter track after another somewhere between a swinging folk and sexytime indie rock. Some people can make an old t-shirt and ripped pair of jeans look hot…Thao is the musical equivalent of that.

Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside: Untamed Beast

The two words that come to my mind when I listen to this album are “bad” and “ass.” It’s not often you peg that on someone named Sallie, but Ms. Ford and her band prove the exception to the rule all over this wonderful follow-up sophomore album. This is old school dawn-of-rock stuff with plenty of “don’t mess with me”-riffed songs with you-kiss-your-mother-with-that-mouth? lyrics that are perfect for Sallie’s voice and her band’s raucous energy.  The Sound Outside is opening for The Get Down Stay Down in a perfect double bill on tour now.
