Five Best Kim Deal Pixies Songs

Pixies

Last week, alt-rock icons The Pixies dropped some surprising news: Bassist Kim Shattuck (a member of pop-punk outfit The Muffs) will replace founding member Kim Deal on the band’s upcoming world tour, which kicks off September 29 in Paris. The band also released “Bagboy,” their first new song in nearly a decade.

While we certainly wish the band an incredible tour, it’s still sad to imagine a Deal-less version of The Pixies. (Some diehards might even call this new line-up a “Deal-breaker.”) In honor of these recent developments, we’ve assembled our list of the Five Best Kim Deal Songs.

5. “Break My Body” (Surfer Rosa, 1988)

“Break My Body” is a quintessential Pixies noise-jangle thrust, but it’s also a Deal-centric hidden gem, featuring some of the bassist’s most impassioned vocals and one of her trickiest, most agile basslines.

4. “Gigantic” (Surfer Rosa, 1988)

One of two Pixies tracks co-written by Deal, “Gigantic” is one of the band’s early anthems, built on Deal’s quintessential dead-eyed bass pulse and her sultry lead croon.

3. “Havalina” (Bossanova, 1990)

Arguably the prettiest Pixies song, “Havalina” boasts dreamy, intertwining vocal lines and Deal’s incessant bass chug.

2. “Silver” (Doolittle, 1989)

“Silver” (the other Pixies track co-written by Deal) is one of the band’s strangest—and most emotionally affecting—tracks. Deal layers creaky slide guitar over a spooky old-west drone, harmonizing sweetly with Francis’ tortured howl.

1. “Here Comes Your Man” (Doolittle, 1989)

Not only one of the definitive Pixies songs, “Here Comes Your Man” is the definitive Kim Deal song. Everybody knows that iconic chorus bass riff (doubled by Black Francis’ jangly guitar), but Deal flexes her muscles in the verses, anchoring the track with snaky, McCartney-esque melodies.

Feel free to debate (and tell us what we missed) in the comments section.
