Tori Amos – “Trouble’s Lament”

“Trouble’s Lament” is the first taste at what Tori Amos’ fourteenth album Unrepentant Geraldines may sound like, and at first it sounds like a total 180 from Amos’ most recent projects, which include a classical song cycle (2011’s Night of Hunters), orchestral retrospective (2012’s Gold Dust) and 2013’s “The Light Princess” musical, which debuted at the British National Theatre.

“Trouble’s Lament” opens with acoustic guitar front-and-center, and it isn’t until nearly 30 seconds that any piano is heard. While this may seem to eschew the traditional Tori Amos set up, with piano and vocals as the main attraction, the song soon opens up into a lilting, rollicking Americana affair that would fit perfectly with 2002’s Scarlet’s Walk.

Amos’ vocals sound fresh, sultry and inviting. She attacks some pretty intense high notes with ease, recalling some of her earliest work.

Unrepentant Geraldines is out May 13th on Mercury Classics.

  1. It’s so tiring when people write that she hits the high notes like she did when she was younger. Just listen to Gold Dust and Night of Hunters, where she hit even higher notes with ease. Or go see her in concert, where she hits those notes each night for months. It’s lazy to compare the track with other albums as well. This is its own song in many ways, and each of Tori’s albums are distinctly different.
