Home Video – “Forget” (SONG REVIEW)

[rating=7.00]

Independent electronic rock band Home Video has been making their brand of under-the-radar music since 2004. With the meteoric rise of EDM in the pop music realm, the Brooklyn-based duo’s new album Here in Weightless Fall represents their first real opportunity to break into the limelight. While the road to success is long for many independent artists, “Forget,” the first single from Home Video’s new album, indicates that the band is focused and on the right track.

“Forget” starts with a series of sequenced beeps and Collin Ruffino’s smooth, electronically manipulated vocals, two elements which remain consistent throughout the entirety of the track. The song gradually builds in layers of drums, guitar and ear-pleasing synth melodies to accompany Ruffino’s voice, the end result being a dynamic and textured lead single which sounds like a hybrid of Cut Copy instrumentals and Thom Yorke vocals. Although the song’s lyrics are a bit overly literal, Ruffino’s unswaying voice (which very nearly matches that of the Radiohead front-man) expertly conveys the heartbreak and anguish of a breakup, as he delivers lines like, “Days are endless, Nights are reminders,” and “The life we made will begin to fade, And eventually she’ll forget me.”

Though the song, at times, frustratingly toes the line between upbeat and relaxed, overall “Forget” is a catchy lead single that showcases Home Video’s direction and focus, and gives listeners a taste of what to expect from Here in Weightless Fall. With any luck, it should be more than enough to turn electronic music fans onto the band’s broad repertoire rife with an indie electronic sound.
