Following her successful lead run in Portlandia and the short lived White Flag, guitarist-vocalist Carrie Brownstein has reunited wiht vocalist-guitarist Corin Tucker and drummer Janet Weiss to give Sleater Kinney another go. The Olympia, Washington trio has re-formed and recorded a new song “Bury Our Friends,” (below) that retains the band’s seminal punk sound. The song appears on a seven-inch that comes with the group’s lavish, career-spanning vinyl box set Start Together, which also includes a 44-page booklet containing never-before-seen photos.
It was revealed that Sleater Kinney will release their new LP No Cities to Love, a 10-track studio album featuring “Bury Your Friends,” on January 20th through Sub Pop. The album was secretly recorded at San Francisco’s Tiny Telephone Recordings earlier this year, with additional sessions taking place at Portland’s Kung Fu Bakery Recording Studio and Seattle’s Electrokitty. Producer John Goodmanson, who worked on the past four Sleater-Kinney albums, also returned to the helm for No Cities to Love. The band released its last album, The Woods, in 2005 and disbanded shortly after.
In addition to their new album, Sleater-Kinney will launch on a 13-date U.S. tour beginning February 8th at Spokane, Washington’s Knitting Factory. An eight-show European tour will follow in March 2015.

The single’s label also mysteriously contained the date “1/20/15.” After a weekend filled with speculation, it was revealed that the reunited trio will release their new LP No Cities to Love, a 10-track studio album featuring “Bury Your Friends,” on January 20th through Sub Pop. “We sound possessed on these songs,” Carrie Brownstein said in a statement, “willing it all – the entire weight of the band and what it means to us – back into existence.” No Cities to Love will be available in CD, vinyl and download formats. A limited edition deluxe version, sporting a 180-gram white vinyl and tri-fold jacket encased in an outer slipcover, will also be produced. That version is accompanied by a single-sided 12″ featuring two bonus tracks on Side A and an etching on Side B.

The concerts will mark the first time Sleater-Kinney have played an entire show together since their epic farewell gig at Portland, Oregon’s Crystal Ballroom in August 2006.
The band, which consists of vocalist-guitarist Corin Tucker, guitarist-vocalist Carrie Brownstein and drummer Janet Weiss, released its last album, The Woods, in 2005. A year later, the group announced that it was disbanding after its appearance at Lollapalooza that August. “We could not have made our music without your enthusiasm, passion, and loyalty,” the group wrote in a joint statement to its fans at the time. “It is you who have made the entire journey worthwhile.”
Since then, Brownstein developed the sketch-comedy series Portlandia with Fred Armisen and reunited with Weiss in the group Wild Flag. Weiss recorded and toured with her group Quasi and as a member of Stephen Malkmus’ band the Jicks and Bright Eyes. And Tucker recorded and toured with her own Corin Tucker Band.
The trio reunited onstage briefly in late 2013 during the encore of a Pearl Jam concert, where they joined the group and ex-R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and R.E.M. contributor Scott McCaughey for Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.” “It was exciting,” Brownstein said of the experience to Rolling Stone earlier this year. “[The other members of the band] are very special to me, and we have an indescribable chemistry. Corin and I in particular.”
Earlier this year, when Rolling Stone asked Brownstein if she would like to record another album or tour with Sleater-Kinney again, she neither confirmed nor denied a reunion. “There’s definitely a feeling in the air,” she said. “Even I’m like, ‘Wait, are we?'” Ultimately, though, she said she was not sure if she would want to reunite. “I don’t know,” Brownstein said. “I don’t. I mean, I’m definitely curious.”
