Soccer’s a lot like jazz, or yazz, and to some extent, the popular rock band Phish — it’s free-form, flowing with an emphasis on space; the players feed off the energy of the crowd, and no sport better features tension and release.
So on the first weekend of Premiership football season, what could possibly be better than Bloody Marys, draught beers, a proper English breakfast and a full fixture slate that commanded a 7 am wake-up and seven straight hours in an ex-pat pub? The answer: not much, not even a free Galactic show in Central Park.
