Hail to the King, Baby: ‘Evil Dead’ Returns in Kick-Ash Comic Con Trailer

One of the more exciting bits of news to come out of San Diego Comic Con this evening was the premiere of the official trailer for the latest Starz series, Ash vs. The Evil Dead, and it’s absolutely glorious. Perfect isn’t a word I like to just throw around, but I’ll use it now. This trailer looks perfect.

Rumors of Ash’s return have swirled for years, even following the critically well-received Evil Dead remake from several years ago. For a while, there was even talk of merging both movies into a giant crossover extravaganza, but despite all the speculation and innuendo, nothing ever materialized. Until now.

Though the show has been under production for some time, and a handful of teasers have been released in recent weeks, this is our first actual glimpse of the show and wow. What a glimpse it is. Everything you know and love about Sam Raimi’s original series is back, and seems to have aged like fine wine.

Chainsaws? Check. Necronomicon? Check. Ash’s slick Cutlass? Check. Blood and gore? Check. Hell, from the looks of this preview, there’s going to be no shortage of quotable quips to keep the geeks among us pleased for years to come.

Any hint of skepticism you might have had will be shot in the face with a boomstick mere seconds into the trailer, as we see our familiar hero struggling with the perils of age on the body. He seems to have moved on from the horror he experienced decades ago until, for unknown reasons, the Deadites return for a little payback. Now, with the help of a new generation, Ash takes to the road to fight the evil dead once more.

Seriously, it looks brilliant. Funny, scary, violent. This is the Evil Dead follow up we’ve been wanting for years. The series is set to premiere October 31 on Starz and I, for one, haven’t been this excited for Halloween since grade school.
