Luke’s Take: The Newport Folk Festival

That said, the artists this year, including Dylan’s son Jakob, certainly did not disappoint. Even a midday storm on Saturday, complete with thunder, lightning and incredible gusts of wind that sent umbrellas soaring through the air, could not put a damper on the event held at beautiful Fort Adams State Park.

Jim James, the front man for My Morning Jacket, began his set just as the Saturday storm cleared and delivered a powerful performance that was the musical highlight of the day. James, dressed in a dapper jacket and tie, poured his heart into each song and captivated the large crowd crammed around the mid-sized second stage. James invited the equally talented M. Ward to join him for three songs towards the end of his set and the duo’s version of Wonderful (The Way I Feel) pretty much summarized the sentiment of those in attendance.

With the history and legacy of the Festival serving as my only reference point, I was surprised how small and intimate it felt. The stages are all within a few hundred yards of each other with the main stage facing directly out into the Harbor. Boats line the event site making for quite the nautical feel that is unique to the festival world. There are no harbors in Manchester, Tennessee. Even Trey Anastasio, who has played more festivals than anyone this side of Michael Franti, commented on the beauty and serenity of the venue during his pre-storm set on Saturday.

Despite its reputation as a giant, snooty New England yacht club, Newport knows how to make fans at this festival feel welcome. Much more so than Dylan back in 1965. If you’re looking for a festival that melds great music with a laid back vibe and gorgeous views, take the trip to Newport next year.

  1. I went two years ago and had best time. I’ve been to almost all the big festival and this one is top notch.
