Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Playin’ Dead, Pt. 1

Since we are just hours away from Bobby, Phil, Mickey and Billy reuniting on stage for the first time since 2004 (along with Warren and Jeff) at the Bryce Jordan Center tonight, and with a 2009 tour in the works, we thought we’d dedicated a week’s worth of Pullin’ ‘Tubes to the good ‘Ol Grateful Dead. YouTube has a plethora of tasty Dead material to choose from that we could easily a post new video every day for years and not get through all of it, so we’ll do our best to pick some of our favorites – we hope you’ll enjoy.

I’ve got the pleasure of kicking things off this week so let’s step back to 1972 – one of the classic years for the band – which found them deftly moving between psychedelic jams and the roots-Americana of Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty material.

So to get your week started we’ll head back to a show in Veneta, OR for a benefit show that the band played for Ken Kesey’s brothers’ creamery – and I’m sure one that’s a staple in most fan’s collections. Let’s check out this version of one of my personal favorite tunes: Jack Straw, that has Bobby and Jerry trading off on verses that really turns the song into a conversation between the two. Be sure to check out the crazy naked hippie dancing on a pole over Bobby’s right shoulder around the 4:20 mark – simply classic…
