Last Week’s Sauce: March 29th – April 4th

Artist & Title: Martin Sexton – Happy
Date & Venue: 2009-04-02 – The Catalyst, Santa Cruz CA
Taper & Show Download: Todd Fleisher

Martin Sexton is a ridiculous performer. This is the second tape this week from the same taper in Santa Cruz, a total coincidence, realized it just as I was writing this. This song comes off of Sexton’s 2007 release Seeds. Sexton has a big run of dates coming up in Canada.

Artist & Title: Mountain Goats – September 15, 1983.
Date & Venue: 2009-04-02 – Courtyard Cafe, Urbana IL
Taper & Show Download: rhinowing

Josh Darnielle (he’s The Mountain Goats) had to cut this gig a little short due to some vocal problems, so I have selected a track towards the beginning of his set. It is a selection off of his 2008 release Heretic Pride. If you’re looking to see The Mountain Goats, you’ll have to wait until they announce more tour dates, because there are none on the books right now.

Artist & Title: The New Deal – Jag Off
Date & Venue: 2009-04-01 – Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY
Taper & Show Download: Jesse F

I am by no means an expert on the catalog of The New Deal, but I figured the last track of the night would be a good one to pick…plenty of time to get the crowd all whipped up by then. The band is off the road the rest of the month but will again be touring in May.

Artist & Title: Steve Kimock Crazy Engine – Crazy Engine
Date & Venue: 2009-04-02 – Domino Room, Bend OR
Taper & Show Download: Mike Albright

Here’s the lineup for Kimock’s new touring group: Melvin Seals (keyboards, vocals), John Morgan Kimock (drums), Janis Wallin (bass), Cheryl Rucker and Shirley Starks (vocals). I selected the song that is also the name of the band, just to be confusing. The band will hit the road again starting next week at the Higher Ground in Vermont.
