With The Dead having played their tour opener last night, and by all accounts hitting some serious high notes alongside the rough spots, I thought it might be fun to dip back into the archives for a something a little left of center. Here, we have a rehearsal before the first Other Ones tour back in ’98, with the band working out the Weir tune Banyan Tree.
It’s a moody piece and they run through it twice with Playing in the Band bookends, but what’s perhaps more interesting is the interaction between the band members: a flaky, flighty Bobby, a cranky Phil and an overly engaged, almost pushy Mickey, with Kimock, Karan and Billy all keeping pretty quiet. Something worth thinking about as we head out on a month of as close as we get we’ll get to Good Old Grateful Dead. Enjoy!
