Bryan Dondero Smacks Down Grace Potter

Grace: You were against the song “I want something I want” and guess what, I really like that song. I feel like you are not going to be prepared to play things like that or do things that I want. And trust me, there are going to be A LOT more of those kinds of things coming up.
Me: I played “Apologies” didn’t I? And you know what, I wasn’t that dead set against that song. I didn’t like it as much as your other songs. I didn’t think it was your best song. I think “Falling or Flying” or “Can’t See Through” or some of the new stuff we recorded are WAY better songs. Am I not allowed to have an opinion?

Of course this is only one side of the story and we’ll be interested to see how Grace responds. The only mention we could find about Dondero’s departure from Grace and her band was this note on her website from March…

We want to apologize for the unfortunate cancellation of the trio of shows scheduled for the end of March (Revolution Hall, 8×10, and Mr. Small’s). GPN and bassist Bryan Dondero have recently parted ways. Bryan is an important part of the band’s growth over these last five years, and he will be missed and not easily replaced. We thank everyone for understanding and look forward to playing for you this summer.

We have a feeling we haven’t heard the last of this story. [HT – Tube]

  1. “Grace: This may sound vain, but the things you wear on stage…I think some of the things you do like putting your foot on the monitor or jump on the riser are at really inappropriate moments.”

    hahahahahahahah

  2. Can they really be selling that many copies of their 2007 studio album at this point? I realize it’s a principle thing, but how many copies of a 2-year old album could they really be selling at this point?

  3. Its just a crazy situation, because let face it bands are a business too. I like Brian enjoyed his play, and enjoyed GPN with him as well. Its too bad that Brian and Grace had a falling out that led to the departure of Brian. Personally I enjoy the band with the new members more, it give the band a fuller sound and allows Scott Tournet to go into orbit more, which is what I really like. I just hope that all of the craziness will die down. Grace is really a great person and of course this is just one side of a life that is always on the road in a cramped bus. All of the people in GPN are good people that is for sure, and I wish them well on the new album coming out. I also send good wishes to Brian as well.

  4. I’d be bitter and/or bummed out and/or feeling left behind too. It’s a relationship. Grace controls the direction of and leads the band (her words) and that direction didn’t work for Brian. That came out over time. Unfortunately for most all bass players, they can be replaced. Their dream of all playing together until they’re 70 didn’t work out for him. It’s just my speculation, but I can relate to both sides. I will say, however, that I miss the Grace Potter that was less completely in love with herself. It comes through in her more recent shows.

  5. Potter: And let me say what nobody else wants to say.

    Dondero: What?

Potter: Your looks have become a problem!
