This Saturday: The Royal Family Get Down!

As I sit here writing this piece, I’ve been taking a wonderful journey down my concert-going memory lane. I saw my first Soulive concert at the original House Of Blues in Cambridge back on May 20th, 2000. Similarly, I first saw John Scofield perform in a quartet at the Regattabar in Cambridge on March 16th, 1999. And then just about two months later, saw the Charlie Hunter/Adam Cruz duo on May 22nd, 1999 at the Somerville Theater. So the timing hits home, as I am essentially celebrating MY 10 year anniversary of being turned on to these artists.

Umphrey's McGee At The Pines Theater in 2006

I’ve only been to The Pines once, and it was in the Summer of 2006 – and I can honestly say, it’s the most beautiful small outdoor performance space I’ve ever been to. The weather looks like it will cooperate, so if you’re within a reasonable driving radius – I highly recommend check out this all-day high-grade talent show. I’ll be there.

Those who don’t want the night to end early can head over to Pearl Street for Adam Deitch and Break Science who will be playing the official after-party.

  1. thanks for the info DaveO, esp. the schedule. i’ve never been to the pines- it looks like a real sweet venue. tho i’m still recovering from moe.down, i’m VERY excited for the Get Down! haven’t seen soulive since spring 08, and it’s been a while since i’ve seen Charlie Hunter & Grace P. i saw Sharon Jones and the DK’s in July @ grassroots fest and they tore it up. it promises to be a fine day.

  2. The Pines is one of the most beautiful venues on the east coast, imo. Perfect setting, and looks like the weather’s gonna hold. Should be a fun one.

  3. Three years after this was written, I come using my Google-Fu to try and locate my first Soulive show, which was ALSO 5/20/00, but it was the All Good Festival. While it’s possible they drove from backwoods WV to Cambridge for a second show (their set was at maybe 3:00 or 4:00), I doubt it. Are y’all sure of that date? I know for a fact that the date is right for the festival since I used to have the tape and wore it out, so it’s etched in my brain, plus the All Good wiki page backs me up. What’s funny is that I just found my show on Archive.org, and it’s listed as 5/22. Odd.
