Stormy Mondays: Rocktober Rolls On

Continuing the Rocktober festivities, this week’s Stormy Monday mix features six classic rock covers from the best and brightest in the world of instrumental music today. Soulive kicks it off with their bombastic version of Jimi Hendrix’s Crosstown Traffic, followed by Marco Benevento with his Mathis/Chamberlain trio doing Pink Floyd’s Fearless.

One good piano deserves another, so Ethan Iverson, David King and Reid Anderson are The Bad Plus doing Bowie’s Life on Mars, which if you haven’t heard it before, is nothing short of stunning (this one’s a British performance from 2007). Staying with the jazz vein, the Bill Frisell Quintet gives his reading of A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall from Italy in 2002. Then to switch gears, Galactic has a killer, screaming version of Zep’s Kashmir before we close it out the way we began, with Crosstown Traffic, MMW doing the honors this time, from way back in 1996. Turn in on, turn it up and as always, enjoy!
